Are enterprises ready for gen AI like ChatGPT? IDC found out.

Enterprises are on the cusp of being able to take advantage of all the wonders artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) can provide. We know you've probably heard it all before, but this time it's for real! There is only one catch, according to research just released from IDC and Teradata — they aren't exactly ready. Womp. Womp.

Silverliners shouldn't be totally surprised by these stats given that we have been covering the challenges enterprises face when managing a multi-cloud environment (hint: it's a lot) which is also complex. However, after reading through the results from IDC's survey of 900 CIOs, CDOs and CFOs in the U.S., Europe and Asia, there is a lot of prep work to be done on the IT front when it comes to managing and monetizing AI and machine learning.

In fact, according to the survey, 85% of execs said that they expect their IT complexity will grow (or stay the same) over the next two to three years, and two-thirds said their IT complexity has already grown over the last 24 months. Coupled with managing that complexity, is finding the talent to manage it all — which as everyone knows is already huge challenge.

Trust or bust!

In addition to that complexity, governance, bias and disinformation are also issues to overcome, according to the survey. "Although nearly 80% of the 900 global executives surveyed had a high or significant level of trust that GenAI could be leveraged for their company’s future offerings and operations, more work is to be done," IDC said in a press release about the report. "Eighty-six percent of respondents agree more governance is needed to ensure the quality and integrity of GenAI insights, and 66% also expressed concerns around GenAI’s potential for bias and disinformation."

Aside from the above take away, our least favorite stat from the report is below: 56% of the CXOs are under "serious pressure" to figure out how to leverage AI. Hang in there CXOs. You can do it!
