The march of big money AI deals between chip vendors and model providers continued this week, with AMD striking a major chip and investment deal with Anthropic.
The new strategic partnership calls for Anthropic to deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 Series GPUs and will see AMD invest up to $5 billion in the Claude maker. The companies said deployment of the first gigawatt will begin in the first half of 2027.
Anthropic already uses AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs, and the new agreement marks a much larger commitment as the company races to secure more compute for Claude training and inference. Anthropic was also recently rumored to be exploring a compute deal with Meta.
Tom Brown, Anthropic’s co-founder and chief compute officer, said access to compute is central to keeping Claude at the frontier and meeting customer demand.
The partnership also includes a multi-year engineering collaboration. Anthropic and AMD plan to use Claude to optimize workloads for AMD Instinct GPUs and accelerate ROCm development, while AMD will roll out Claude more broadly across its engineering and product development teams.
AMD CEO Lisa Su said the deal brings together Anthropic’s frontier AI work with AMD’s high-performance computing portfolio and positions Helios as a major platform for next-generation AI infrastructure.
The agreement is another notable AI infrastructure win for AMD as it tries to gain ground in a GPU market still dominated by Nvidia. AMD recently inked major chip deals with Meta and OpenAI.
