Report: Comcast says layoffs are looming in its connectivity biz

  • Comcast is reportedly plotting job cuts across its broadband, mobile and pay TV unit
  • Analysts think the move is hardly surprising given Comcast’s recent restructuring moves
  • Comcast had roughly 182K employees at the end of 2024

Comcast is reportedly planning to cut jobs at its Connectivity and Platforms segment, which spans the company’s broadband, mobile and pay TV businesses.

According to Reuters, Comcast employees received a memo stating that beginning in January, the company will remove a layer between its corporate and regional offices. Exactly how many jobs will be cut is unknown, but the memo said customer service and retail positions will not be impacted.

Reports of layoffs come as Comcast grapples with prolonged broadband subscriber losses, shedding 226,000 internet customers in Q2 2025. The operator has tried to rebound by leaning more into wireless as well as rolling out five-year price locks for new broadband customers.

Comcast’s move is hardly surprising, analysts told us.

“My understanding is that it is mostly about streamlining reporting relationships and standardizing pricing nationally, so in the context of the company’s avowed commitment to being more nimble and aggressive in broadband, I don’t think it’s surprising,” said MoffettNathanson analyst Craig Moffett.

Recon Analyst principal Roger Entner meanwhile said the planned layoffs are part of “the constant seesaw between efficiency and flexibility.”

“Efficiency is the winner of the year,” he said. “Give it a few years and they will change back again.”

News of planned layoffs follow reports from earlier this year that indicated Comcast intends to cut nearly 2,000 customer service jobs in its U.K.-based Sky division. Comcast is also in the midst of spinning off most of its cable TV portfolio – Versant – into a separate, public company.

Elsewhere in the telecom realm, operators that have disclosed layoff plans in 2025 include AT&T, Charter and USCellular.

Fierce reached out to Comcast for comment and will update this story if we hear back. As of December 31, 2024, Comcast had approximately 182,000 full-time and part-time employees, with roughly 30% based in over 30 countries outside the U.S.
