SANTA CLARA, CALIF. — Arista Networks has converted the AI buildout into market leadership. After overtaking Cisco as the largest data center Ethernet switch vendor in 2024, the vendor is riding the wave, as hyperscalers race to wire ever-larger GPU clusters with high-speed Ethernet.
"We are now the number one market leader in global data center. We took over from Cisco a number of quarters ago and haven't looked back," said Brendan Gibbs, Arista VP of AI, routing and switching platforms, in a meeting with Fierce at Arista's company headquarters. "AI has been a huge tailwind behind us."
The numbers bear that out. Arista reported first-quarter 2026 revenue of $2.71 billion, up 35.1% year over year, and on the same earnings call raised its full-year AI networking target to $3.5 billion — roughly double its AI-related sales from a year earlier. Two customers, Microsoft and Meta, each account for at least 10% of revenue, the threshold that forces public disclosure.
The demand is concentrated at the leading edge. Customers want the newest silicon at the fastest pace, Gibbs said, moving from 400-gig to 800-gig and now to 1.6-terabit platforms.
Power is now as much a constraint as bandwidth. Arista is leaning on liquid cooling and linear-drive pluggable optics, or LPO, which strip the digital signal processor out of the optic. "It's literally 50% less power consumed per optic," Gibbs said — meaningful across the hundreds of thousands of optics in a large cluster.
The software moat
Arista's central claim to differentiation is software: a single operating system, EOS, and one management stack running across its entire range, from 1-gig, power-over-Ethernet campus switches to 800-gig and 1.6T AI spines. Rivals carry a different operating system, chipset and management tool for each product line — "duplicated bugs in many cases," Gibbs said. He likened Cisco's portfolio to a conglomerate: "That's like General Electric — they're all under the umbrella of Cisco, but they're all different."
That consistency is what pulled Arista into the campus market, where it remains a small-share challenger against Cisco and HPE's Aruba. Customers running Arista in the data center initially repurposed the same switches in their campuses because they perceive Arista's quality as better than the competition, Gibbs said. Arista has since built dedicated campus hardware and, through its VeloCloud acquisition, entered SD-WAN, adding an integrated firewall to that platform. It is also courting telcos and service providers with the same battle-tested BGP and MPLS stack it built for hyperscalers — a market where, Gibbs said, incumbent vendor quality is poor and operators endure a 15- to 20-year technology life cycle. "We can free you from the shackles of your past," he said.
Where Nvidia has the upper hand
The competitive framing gets more complicated with Nvidia. Gibbs described the relationship as classic industry co-opetition: "We wouldn't be sitting here talking about generative AI if it weren't for their GPUs." But the two companies compete on networking. Nvidia prefers to sell the full stack — GPUs, switches, optics and cables together.
Arista has catching up to do in scale-up — the network that lashes GPUs together inside a rack for memory coherency. That market "is not relevant from a financial perspective to probably 2027 at the earliest," because it remains "a bastion of strength for Nvidia" through its proprietary NVLink interconnect, Gibbs said. Arista's answer is to make Ethernet the open alternative, as a co-founder of the Ultra Ethernet Consortium and the Ethernet Scale-Up Networking (ESUN) group at Open Compute Project (OCP) — a bet that AMD and the hyperscalers building custom accelerators will favor open Ethernet over Nvidia lock-in. It is the same thesis CEO Jayshree Ullal has pressed publicly, calling Ethernet the "eventual winner and equalizer" for AI.
In scale-out and scale-across networks that connect racks and sites, Arista already leads, Gibbs said.
The real constraints
Arista's biggest vulnerabilities are structural. "We are a smaller company relative to a Cisco. We don't have their presence in every geography," Gibbs said. The company is also lagging in brand recognition.
Supply is another constraint. Arista has warned that wafer shortages, supply de-commits and lead times beyond 52 weeks are limiting its ability to fill AI demand and could pressure margins.
