Open handset platform consortium LiMo Foundation announced the availability of its mobile Linux-based LiMo Platform Release 1. Leveraging standards and open-source projects, the modular, plug-in, hardware-independent architecture promises a secure runtime environment. According to the LiMo Foundation, all of the enabling technology within Release 1 is in commercial deployment across multiple handsets as well as several reference and pilot devices scheduled to hit the market later this year. LiMo's API specifications are available to developers at www.limofoundation.org--middleware components for the LiMo Platform can be implemented in either C or C++ programming languages, and SDKs for Native, Webkit and Java operating environments will be released during the second half of 2008. Release 2 of the LiMo Platform is now being specified and developed, with completion planned by year's end. LiMo Foundation also announced that semiconductor giant Texas Instruments is its newest Core member.
