RIM introduces BlackBerry Tablet OS Native SDK beta

Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) introduced the beta version of its Native SDK for BlackBerry Tablet OS, touting tools enabling game developers to code BlackBerry PlayBook tablet titles in C/C++, the Standard Template Library and Open GL ES 1.1/2.0.

The BlackBerry Tablet OS Native SDK touts a series of POSIX compliant libraries alongside support for accelerometer, device orientation and related functions designed to simplify developers' efforts to port existing games to the PlayBook format. The SDK also features the Eclipse-based QNX Momentics Tool Suite, which includes memory profiling, application debugging and memory usage statistics optimized for programs including hardware-accelerated OpenGL apps. RIM will also introduce periodic updates throughout the beta period, promising new APIs and other enhancements. Click here to apply.

Both the BlackBerry PlayBook and the BlackBerry Tablet OS are built on the QNX Neutrino microkernel architecture. Late last year, RIM confirmed the BlackBerry Tablet OS eventually will replace its current BlackBerry smartphone operating system across all devices the company produces--however, the transition could take several years.
