Sony Ericsson, a longtime champion of the UIQ, has agreed to buy the smartphone platform from Symbian. The Sony Ericsson P990, the first UIQ3 phone, was announced with some fanfare last year but despite serious geek cred, the phone didn't exactly lead to mainstream U.S. support for UIQ. Sony Ericsson expects the deal to close in the next few months.
