Alcatel-Lucent space unit secures $882m deal with Globalstar

Alcatel-Lucent's space unit won a 661 million euro ($882 million) contract with Globalstar to design, manufacture and deliver 48 low-earth-orbit satellites, an Associated Press report said.

The Associated Press report said the contract also includes the provision of support services before and during the launches and mission operations support.

California-based Globalstar provides mobile satellite voice and data services to businesses, the report said.

The agreement 'not only secures the Globalstar space segment through at least 2025, but also takes us another step to offering a host of exciting future services,' Globalstar CEO Jay Monroe was quoted as saying.

Globalstar satellites will have a lifetime of 15 years, the report said.

The agreement is subject to the establishment of an escrow account, which will require the consent of Globalstar's lenders, the report further said.
