GSMA: Global mobile money account registrations grew by almost 100M in 2015

Close to 100 million new mobile money accounts were registered during 2015, bringing the total number of accounts to 411 million globally, the GSMA announced. The association said over 1 billion transactions were processed in December 2015 alone, and that mobile money services are now available in 85 per cent of countries where the bulk of the population lack access to more formal financial institutions. Sub-Saharan Africa continued to account for the majority of live mobile money services, however the GSMA said at least half of the new services registered in 2015 came from outside that region. By the end of 2015 there were 271 mobile money services available in 93 countries, the association revealed. Report
