Microsoft joins Motorola, Nokia in mobile TV pact

Software giant Microsoft has joined other technology leaders in establishing the Mobile DTV Alliance, an organization created to promote the growth of digital video broadcasting-handheld (DVB-H), a standard for broadcast digital TV on mobile devices.

In a statement, Microsoft said it joined the ranks of Intel, Modeo LLC, Motorola, Nokia and Texas Instruments in spearheading the initiative.

As part of the Mobile DTV Alliance, Microsoft would help promote DVB-H best practices for delivery of premium-quality broadcast media to mobile devices for the North American market, the company said in the statement.

DVB-H technologies enable consumers to receive live TV-like experiences directly on their mobile handset and other DVB-H-based devices. In addition, operators will benefit from increased revenue opportunities while preserving cellular network bandwidth for voice and other data services.
