Nokia goes looking for a fight over touchscreen handsets

Having seen a decline in its smartphone business in 2008--the first time ever, Nokia has welcomed in the New Year by stating it will seek revenge over its competitors this year in the battle for the touchscreen market.

Accepting that Nokia had "become a follower" in this particular technology, the company's CEO, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, announced Nokia wants to regain the initiative by becoming the world's largest maker of touchscreen phones. "We want to develop touchscreen technology suitable for several different handsets."

A Gartner analyst said Nokia's goal of becoming the world's largest maker of mobiles with touchscreens was realistic, "though it would have to expand its range beyond the 5800 and N97."

At the same time, Nokia also revealed it would focus on profits as against meeting sales targets for 2009. "We will continue to combine market share and margins in the right way in order to maximise the bottom line," said Kallasvuo. However, he added the company aimed to increase its cellphone market share in 2009, helped by consumers' appetite for cheaper models.
