Who remembers W3?

Do you know what W3 is?

Well, according to an article on Yahoo’s finance pages, that’s what the World Wide Web was originally abbreviated to when the first public-facing page launched way back in 1991.

The information is one of 12 web-related ‘firsts’ listed by the site. Other gems include details on when the first email was sent, who was first to send an instant message, and when the first book was bought from Amazon.

While it all makes for interesting reading, for me it’s the bit on W3 that is most interesting. Specifically, the information on that first public web page that explained the purpose of the web.

W3 has certainly travelled a long way since that original mission statement.
