Arelion completed a live field trial on its 500-kilometer Amsterdam-to-London route using Nokia optical networking technology, demonstrating a way to expand backbone capacity for AI and other bandwidth-heavy applications. The trial used Nokia’s 1830 Global Express Super C and Super L open line system, CHMQ6 thin transponder modules and ICE-X 400G and 800G ZR+ coherent pluggable optics.
Arelion said the trial expanded usable optical spectrum by about 21%, adding room on existing fiber infrastructure to support services such as its Managed Optical Fiber Network, which provides managed optical connectivity between data centers and other digital infrastructure.
Arelion positioned the trial as part of its broader investment in its global Internet backbone as enterprises, neoscalers and service providers look for more scalable links between data centers and cloud environments to support AI workloads. Nokia said combining expanded Super C and Super L spectrum with coherent pluggables can help operators increase fiber capacity while improving power and cost efficiency.
