Google invests $15B in Finland data centers, power infrastructure

Google announced its single largest investment in Europe, outlining plans to invest $15.1 billion (€13 billion) in data center and power infrastructure in Finland over the next two years.

The investment will include new data centers and infrastructure in Hamina, Kajaani, Muhos and Vaala, building on Google’s existing presence in Hamina. It also includes a 22-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Finnish energy company, Fortum, to keep its Loviisa nuclear power plant running as well as investments in onshore wind generation and battery storage.

Google framed the power agreements as part of its new blueprint for responsible data center development.

“This investment underscores Google’s commitment to grow our presence responsibly, pairing the expansion of our technical infrastructure with new energy capacity, grid enhancements, and energy affordability initiatives,” Alphabet and Google Chief Investment Officer Ruth Porat said in a statement.

Finland has seen at least 10 major data center/site announcements in the last two years. Google’s news follows data center project announcements from Nebius, Cerebras, Pure DC and Arcem in the country.
