How industry decides which network technologies survive

Industry is setting the standard for what modern communications networks must deliver. Factories, utilities, farms, and other critical operations need more than connectivity. Their networks must keep equipment running, power flowing, and essential services available, making reliability, automation, and resilience central to the network’s role.
 
That role now reaches beyond connecting locations. Networks must also connect the devices, sensors, machines, and systems spread across industrial environments. Enterprises expect this infrastructure to help them make faster decisions, automate workflows, and improve operations. As a result, the network is becoming a platform for digital manufacturing, autonomous systems, and AI.
 
AI makes distributed infrastructure even more important. Data must move between machines, applications, and locations in real time, often with little tolerance for latency. Service providers already operate the network, power, and data center assets needed to support those demands, giving them an important role in the AI economy.
 
Industry will determine which technologies are ready for that responsibility. Factories cannot tolerate downtime, utilities cannot operate with uncertainty, and critical infrastructure cannot depend on technology that fails under pressure. When networking and AI prove themselves in these environments, they prove they are ready for the wider economy.
