Israeli operator may abandon WiMAX

Israeli operator MIRS Communications said it is looking at the possibility of abandoning its WiMAX plans in favor of a WCDMA network as Israel's Ministry of Communications has delayed issuing a tender for WiMAX.

MIRS, which is owned by Motorola, had hoped to get its hands on WiMAX frequencies to give it an advantage over it larger mobile rivals. But the ministry's delay is closing MIRS' window of opportunity to deploy WiMAX before LTE comes to market in the 2010 time frame.
