Now that the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, have wrapped up, Nominum wants everyone to know that its security solution based upon the Internet's Domain Name System (DNS) has been protecting Rostelecom's free Wi-Fi network in the city.
Rostelecom deployed Nominum's Vantio ThreatAvert earlier this year to protect its free Wi-Fi hotspots in Sochi from the sudden influx of visitors that was expected.
Vantio ThreatAvert uses DNS data to protect against attacks originating from within the network, such as botnets. DNS translates Internet domain names to the numerical IP addresses needed for Internet navigation. Nominum said Vantio ThreatAvert leverages its Global Intelligence Xchange, a real-time database of threats that lists malicious domains and URLs.
Meanwhile, Nominum is also hoping to extend its DNS expertise into the area of marketing and customer care. The company is trying to get mobile operators to harness DNS to upsell and cross-sell products and build new business models, said Sanjay Kapoor, the company's CMO and senior vice president business strategy.
"We don't solve retention by addressing retention. We address engagement," Kapoor told FierceWirelessTech on the sidelines of last week's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
During the trade show, Nominum launched its N2 applications, which are an extension of the vendor's core N2 platform. Nominum contends that the in-browser messaging capabilities of its N2 applications enable mobile operators and other communications service providers to reach customers, at minimal cost, in real-time, via opt-in, in-browser notifications or offers.
"Mobile operators that deploy free public Wi-Fi to offload traffic from their networks can use N2 applications to increase ARPU through targeted offers and advertising via in-browser messages and videos to Wi-Fi customers," the company said.
DNS "is the phone book for the Internet, but "no one else is leveraging DNS for advertising and marketing," said Kapoor.
