AT&T's 1 Gbps service reaches 15 North Carolina communities in first 18 months of service

AT&T's (NYSE: T) 1 Gbps service now reaches 15 communities across 5 major metros in North Carolina, marking a major milestone in the telco's $1.65 billion investment in the state's wireline and wireless networks.

A key benefactor of the build has been apartment dwellers. The service provider now offers 1 Gbps at nearly 20,000 apartments at over 80 apartment complexes.

The provider has focused on delivering services to some of North Carolina's fastest growing apartment communities including many in Charlotte, Greensboro, Raleigh-Durham and Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Consumers that reside in these cities can determine what properties have been equipped with GigaPower via the telco's interactive tool at att.com/apartments.

AT&T also provides free internet at affordable housing complexes for low-income residents in Raleigh and Chapel Hill as part of its agreement with the North Carolina Next Generation Network (NCNGN) project. Additionally, AT&T provides 1 Gbps services at more than 10 community centers.

North Carolina is part of a broader set of communities AT&T plans to reach with its FTTH service.

Currently available in over 1.6 million locations across 25 of the nation's largest metro areas, AT&T plans to expand the availability of ultra-fast internet speeds up to 1 Gbps in parts of 31 more areas. This comes to a total of at least 56 metros. Ultimately, AT&T said it plans to reach more than 14 million residential and commercial locations with fiber.

Outside of North Carolina, AT&T said earlier this week that it it will expand the service in over 10 markets across its wireline footprint.

Among the new markets are cities and towns in the Midwest, South and West, including Chicago, Dallas, Miami and Los Angeles.
