DQE Communications, a Pittsburgh-based fiber network provider and subsidiary of Duquesne Light Holdings, is joining the ongoing fiber acquisition frenzy by acquiring the assets of Met-Net Communications.
The acquisition of Met-Net is part of a broader strategy the service provider is taking to expand its fiber network. Interestingly, DQE and Met-Net already know one another, as DQE had been supplying network services to Met-Net.
David Weber, President of DQE Communications, said that because the two companies have been working together, the acquisition will be "seamless for Met-Net customers."
Although DQE did not reveal specific numbers about how many more miles of fiber it will add to its current network, it did say it will extend service to Pennsylvania business customers in Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Indiana, Washington and Westmoreland counties. Later this summer, DQE did say that it would begin work on building out new backbone routes in Butler and Westmoreland counties, followed by Washington County.
Through this new network expansion, DQE will extend its fiber-based metro Ethernet services to more businesses and create a foundation to deliver emerging cloud services.
