Equinix builds out Tokyo-based international business exchange data center

Equinix sees strong demand from its global IT and cloud service provider customers so it's plunking down $70 million to build out its third International Business Exchange (IBX) in Tokyo, Japan.

Dubbed TY3, the 76,000 square foot IBX data center which is set to be completed in mid-2011, will offer 960 cabinet equivalents to data centric industries including cloud and IT service providers, online content and financial houses that  conduct business in the Japanese market.

As part of a company-wide expansion effort into the Asia Pacific region, Equinix's TY3 IBX data center will offer clients direct fiber connectivity to Equinix's two other IBX centers in Tokyo, the TY1 and TY2. Current and potential new customers will be able to get direct access to over 50 international and domestic carrier networks.

Given that Tokyo is a major financial hub, the TY3 will give financial trading companies and content providers close proximity to the city's major financial exchanges. Having this access will help financial companies meet their low latency networking needs.
