Level 3 is making headway with its growing video business, winning a deal to provide its Video Cloud solution to video streaming provider iStreamPlanet, which will deliver it to major media and entertainment outlets.
Set on providing multi-screen video on a global scale, this agreement will bring together Level 3's Video Cloud solution, a combination of its CDN and Vyvx solution, and iStreamPlanet's live video encoding platform Aventus.
Both companies bring a number of elements to the table.
Level 3 will supply its Vyvx broadcast fiber network, including satellite and downlink capabilities and managed broadcast encoding/transcoding, and its secure global CDN to enable acquisition and distribution of content. iStreamPlanet's Aventus will give clients live video ingest, processing and multiscreen packaging, including ad and slate insertion, Nielsen audience tracking, closed captioning, subtitles and content protection.
One of the key trends this new agreement highlights is the need for content owners and distributors to replace their hardware-based infrastructure with more agile software and cloud-based network solutions to keep up with consumer demand to access video events from any device. By opting for a cloud-based solution, content distributors can more rapidly scale their feature set and gain a faster time to market.
"The combined services we announce today with iStreamPlanet provide a superior operational environment for video publishers," said Mark Taylor, vice president of Media and IP Services at Level 3, in a release. "The live encoding and multiscreen packaging and publishing offered on the Aventus cloud service are a great fit for the operational ease that we strive to offer our customers as they develop their video businesses."
The timing of this deal could not be better. According to a recent revenue forecast from Accustream Research, CDN revenue is set to rise 19 percent to reach $3.36 billion in 2014.
