Level 3 Communications (NYSE: LVLT) announced Tuesday it was awarded a four-year contract to provide communications services to the United Kingdom's Forestry Commission.
Awarded under the Government Procurement Service Managed Telecommunications Convergence Framework (MTCF), the service provider will deliver a host of services, including data and voice network, collaboration and broadband services.
The commission said the new services will help it "improve efficiency across the organization, support an increasingly mobile workforce and achieve compliance with the Public Services Network (PSN) standards."
Some of the efficiencies that will come out of working with Level 3 will be a centralized management hub to ensure compliance and security and reducing annual costs from £2 million ($3.14 million) to £1.3 million ($2.04 million). In addition, the contract includes continuity of operations (COOP) and disaster recovery elements to ensure uptime if a manmade or natural disaster occurs at any of its sites.
Level 3 and the Forestry Commission are hardly strangers as the service provider has been providing service to the agency since 2005.
Getting this contract should serve as a confidence booster for Level 3, which reported in its Q2 earnings that slow UK government spending drove a wider than expected loss. During the second quarter, UK government sales declined 13 percent to $42 million.
