Lumen takes its edge compute offering to APAC

After testing the waters in the U.S. and expanding to Europe, Lumen Technologies is bringing its Edge Bare Metal service to the Asia-Pacific Region. The move comes after the company deployed an edge solution in the region for the blockchain-focused Solana Foundation in February.

Lumen’s new service will be based around edge locations in Japan and Singapore, offering customers access to dedicated hosted server hardware. Costs are determined based on usage.

According to the company’s network map, Lumen offers access to seven co-located data centers in Tokyo and one in Osaka, Japan. It has three data centers in Singapore, including one co-located facility with Equinix. Lumen’s portfolio in the region also includes private cloud services based in both countries.

Francis Thangasamy, managing director for Lumen Technologies APAC, said in a statement its expansion in the region is exciting given “so much here is leading-edge.”

“The region has a strong presence of enterprise customers using blockchain technologies to drive innovation,” Thangasamy explained. “APAC customers across key industries such as retail, manufacturing and financial services can now deploy applications and workloads that demand ultra-low latency at the edge.”

Lumen debuted its bare metal edge as-a-service back in December 2020 as part of an effort to capitalize on enterprise demand for low-latency computing. It took the offering across the pond in July of this year with a rollout in Europe. It is not entirely clear, however, what will happen with its edge compute offering there, given the company just announced plans to sell its EMEA assets to Colt Technology Services for $1.8 billion.
