While the talk of the town at this week's Mobile World Congress will likely be about whether WiMAX or LTE is the best 4G path for Motorola's new Android device, all of these networks and services will require higher bandwidth backhaul capabilities that only IP/Ethernet can fulfill. Spirent believes it can accommodate the North American and European provider's migration from circuit switched TDM to Ethernet-based wireless backhaul with its newly debuted integrated 1/10 GigE TestCenter Live network test, diagnostics and performance monitoring product.
Despite its advertised benefits of greater flexibility, the one issue that has made wireless operators hesitant to immediately embrace Ethernet-based wireless backhaul over traditional TDM-based circuits is the concern that the technology was not carrier grade. But as wireless operators migrate to Ethernet-based backhaul, Spirent says the TestCenter Live product can help wireless operators and wholesale backhaul provider suppliers troubleshoot Ethernet backhaul links to ensure SLAs and maintain uptime.
Unlike other products that require multiple test probes, the Spirent Test Center Live provides simultaneous on-demand testing and proactive performance on one probe. The new product also offers bandwidth flexibility with support for 1/10 GigE today and is 40/100 GigE ready.
Although it would not reveal any customer names yet, Spirent said the new system has already been deployed by a number of wireless operators, including a major North American 4G wireless operator.
