TeliaSonera is taking charge of the VDSL2 opportunity by launching what it says is the first 100 Mbps service in Finland. The Finnish telco will use the new network to offer the country's residential customers high speed data and high definition IPTV services.
Taking a fiber to the building (FTTB) approach, TeliaSonera is focusing on the Multi Dwelling Unit (MDU) broadband opportunity. This approach will allow Telia Sonera to potentially gain multiple subscribers in each building. Leveraging Alcatel-Lucent's 7354 ISAM FTTB Remote Unit, TeliaSonera will trench fiber into apartment building basements and offer users high-speed broadband connections over the building's existing copper wires. In addition to supplying network gear, Alcatel-Lucent will support the network rollout with professional network installation, support and maintenance services.
VDSL2 activity continues to pick up. Just last week, Dutch service provider Tele2 launched its 60 Mbps Fiberspeed offering. Meanwhile, U.S.-based service provider Qwest has been making its own VDSL2 waves. Earlier this summer, the Denver, Colo-based service provider launched its VDSL2-based service in select markets. Interestingly, to better compete with the telco, Cox Communications launched DOCSIS 3.0-based service in Arizona, which is a major Qwest VDSL2 market.
