Tiscali is building a new foundation for growth through the expansion of its optical backbone and CLEC operations.
First on its list is the upgrade to its nationwide backbone and metro networks by deploying Infinera's ATN metro edge platform in over 80 urban areas where it currently has a network presence. These areas include a number of major and medium-sized Italian cities such as Rome, Milan, Turin, and Palermo. The new network will enable Tiscali to support a large mix of services including Ethernet, SAN, SONET/SDH, OTN and video.
Along with the optical network upgrade, Tiscali is expanding its Local Loop Unbundling (LLU) network presence through a new wholesale arrangement with Italian incumbent operator Telecom Italia. Upon completion, Tiscali will gain 200 new sites by mid-2010. Overall, the project will increase its LLU access footprint from 486 local exchanges to 686 on Telecom Italia's PSTN network.
