Verizon (NYSE: VZ) has launched a new SDN-based network solution leveraging Viptela's SD-WAN Platform, marking the telco's latest move to implement software-based elements into its service delivery process.
Viptela also entered into an exclusive managed services arrangement with Verizon in the United States.
A key focus of this partnership is to address the business market's demand for managed hybrid network solutions that allow customers to access their applications from the cloud or on-premises from any device or desktop while better managing the ever-increasing volume of data.
Given the unique requirements of enterprise customers, the new service will allow customers to "mix and match" private and public IP connections such as MPLS, wireless LTE, broadband and Ethernet. These elements will be based on the enterprise's geographic location, bandwidth and application service availability needs.
The new managed service is being offered in the U.S., Europe and the Asia Pacific region.
Viptela's solution will be delivered to customers from Verizon's cloud and will be supported by Verizon's IT consulting group which helps enterprises manage their transition to SD-based networking and can also provide integration and lifecycle management services.
The solution expands Verizon's Managed SD-WAN portfolio currently based on Cisco's iWAN technology in the U.S., Europe and the Asia-Pacific region, which it launched in 2015.
This service with Virtela builds upon the initial vision Verizon laid out in April 2015. At that time, the service provider named five of its key vendor partners: Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU), Cisco, Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC), Juniper Networks and Nokia (NYSE:NOK).
However, it added it would work with other vendors, and the work with Viptela reflects that notion.
