EU plans to monitor bills to enforce roaming rules

Following up on the roaming rules saga in the EU, the European Commission promised to "continue to monitor prices, in particular for SMS and data roaming, to make sure consumers do not suffer in other ways," according to EU Telecommunications Commissioner Viviane Reding. "I hope that operators now understand the EU's ability to act," Reding said. "My message to them: Move now and bring down SMS and data roaming charges quickly, or we will be forced to also intervene there very shortly."

The new roaming rules come into effect this summer to ensure a price ceiling on international roaming calls between carriers in the EU.
