LG Electronics demonstrated mobile Digital TV (DTV) on three of its handsets at the International CTIA Wireless 2009 show, and said that the service would be coming to more devices in 2010.
The devices--the LG Lotus, Voyager and Maize phones--were running on the Advanced Television Systems Committee Mobile DTV standard. The handset maker said that high-efficiency battery technology can provide users up to four hours of mobile DTV viewing. LG is a co-developer of the ATSC system.
In December, the ATSC announced its approval of the Mobile DTV specification as a Candidate Standard, allowing broadcasters to extend DTV broadcasts, including live, local and national programming, to handsets.
LG was demonstrating the technology showing digital TV broadcasts from a local Sinclair Broadcast Group station, KVCW channel 29. LG said that in the future handsets with the technology will have antennas built into the handset that can expand out from the device. The Lotus was using an antenna attached in the phone's headset jack. LG said ATSC Mobile DTV will enable over-the-air DTV programming, in other electronics as well, including handheld TVs, personal media players, navigation devices and laptop computers and automotive entertainment systems.
