Nokia insisted its famous Bell Labs division will continue to play a key role at the company, after facing fierce criticism from former CTO and Bell Labs President Marcus Weldon over deep staff cuts.
In a scathing post on LinkedIn, Weldon said he believes Bell Labs staffing has been cut to nearly half of the 1,200 strong workforce that was in place during his tenure. While he acknowledged that restructuring could account for some of those changes, he argued a 50% reduction in force in five years “is both shocking and unprecedented.”
Weldon also took issue with Nokia’s decision to eliminate the title of “president” within Bell Labs and remove plaques of past presidents. The ex-exec characterized the moves as “erasure” of the division’s historical significance and achievements.
Nokia hit back in comments to Fierce, with a company spokesperson stating Bell Labs “remains a deeply important part of Nokia, with a long track record of turning world-class research into technologies that deliver commercial impact and move our industry forward.”
However, it also acknowledged that hundred-year-old Bell Labs is “entering a new chapter.”
It declined to comment on cuts to specific business units, referring Fierce to previous public statements regarding reductions across the company. In 2023, the company said it planned to cut 14,000 jobs by the end of 2026 as part of a broad restructuring initiative.
Nokia had an average of 86,700 employees in 2023, with around 10,400 in North America where Bell Labs headquarters is located. By 2025, that figure was down to 78,000, with 10,000 in North America.
Two months ago, Nokia brought in ex-Intel executive Guru Parulkar as the new Head of Nokia Bell Labs. At the time, Nokia said it was planning to bring Bell Labs Core Research and Bell Labs Solutions Research together with a unified focus on “breakthrough science and technology for the AI era.”
In its 2025 annual report published in March 2026, Nokia said Bell Labs research was focused on building Physical AI models, space communications and network technology for AI and 6G.
Parulkar’s entrance coincided with the retirement of Bell Labs veteran and Core Research President Peter Vetter, as well as rumors of deep cuts to the Core Research team. It also came just a few months after Nokia appointed another ex-Intel exec, Pallavi Mahajan, as CTO, with oversight of Bell Labs.
