O2 Germany, Siemens ink deal for UMTS radio links

O2 Germany selected Siemens to provide the radio link systems necessary to build out its GSM/UMTS data network. O2 Germany will pay Siemens €250 million for the order that will extend through 2010. Siemens claims that 60 percent of GSM/UMTS networks use radio link systems to transfer data between UMTS-base stations and transfer units at distances of 20 to 100 km. Siemens plans to install radio links with two different transfer rates: one with speeds up to 34 Mbps and another for areas requiring more bandwidth and a high-speed transfer rate of up to 622 Mbps.
