Private 5G: Working into the land down under

  • Australia's businesses are moving into the private 5G sphere
  • Newmont mines and the Australian grand prix set the tone for this technology
  • Grand View Research expects the tech will earn $504.2 million by 2030

Australia is getting into the private 5G network game, following the lead of China and other regions of the world.

As Fierce Network has reported before, China is way ahead on private 5G with around 4,000 factories already enabled with private 5G due to the Chinese government causing somewhat of a stampede toward the tech, said Dell’Oro Group RAN analyst Stefan Pongratz. Meanwhile in the West, Canada, Europe and the U.S. have been getting into enterprise private 5G since late 2023.

Now it's Oz's turn. SNS Telecom & IT explained to Fierce Network how Australia service providers and enterprises are moving away from LTE tech and more toward private 5G.

“Although Australia is one of the most well-established national markets for private wireless networks based on LTE technology, 5G variants are just beginning to gain momentum,” 5G research director Asad Khan said in an email.

A “recent installation is the Australian Grand Prix Corporation's private 5G network at the Albert Park Street Circuit in Melbourne, which provided wireless connectivity for the paddock, back-office applications, ticketing and POS (Point-of-Sale) systems during the 2025 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix in March,” Khan said.

Fierce covered mining company Newmont’s move from private 4G to 5G this week.

Newmont used Ericsson and Telstra for private 5G equipment and spectrum. Ericsson and Telstra have been working together on private 5G projects since January 2022.

Overall, it has taken three years for private 5G to really break through although that will change.

Grand View Research said that private 5G is “expected to reach a projected revenue of US$ 504.2 million by 2030” from US$33.5 million in 2023.
