Nokia's (NYSE:NOK) Lumia 800 smartphone, its high-end model running Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows Phone software, is headed to the U.S. market, according to FCC documents unearthed this week.
The documents--a prerequisite for every device sold in the United States--do not reveal much about which carrier the Lumia 800 is destined for. However, the device lacks a 1700 MHz AWS radio, meaning it will not be joining the Lumia 710 on T-Mobile USA, which T-Mobile will launch Jan. 11. T-Mobile uses AWS for its HSPA service.
However, devices approved by the FCC might not actually be released in the market.
In a recent interview with FierceWireless, Chris Weber, Nokia's president of North America, said Nokia intends to eventually offer "a portfolio of devices in the U.S. at different price points for different user experiences, across multiple operators." Reports have indicated that both Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) and AT&T are testing LTE versions of Nokia's high-end Lumia 800 smartphone. (Currently, Windows Phone does not support LTE.)
In any case, Nokia is likely to clarify the situation at the Consumer Electronics Show next month. The company has scheduled a press conference for Jan. 9.
