Samsung Electronics America is relocating its U.S. headquarters from New Jersey to its existing campus in Plano, Texas.
The company didn’t say exactly how many employees are affected by the move. The transition is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
The relocation certainly isn’t new news. Reuters reported earlier this year that 739 roles in the Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, site were affected by the decision, which focuses on consumer electronics and not chips.
Changes were made at the Texas facilities as well. Reuters said some 100 workers, including staff in the mobile division, in Samsung’s Plano office were let go; the publication cited a person who said they were among the employees who were laid off.
Korean media reported that in total, about 1,000 employees were employed at the offices in Englewood Cliffs; most of them were expected to be reassigned to the new headquarters in Texas.
“The majority of our impacted employees located in our New Jersey headquarters have been offered relocation opportunities,” Samsung said in a statement provided to Fierce.
The change is part of a plan to better position the organization for long-term growth and future success, with the intention to “strengthen alignment across teams and offices and sharpen Samsung’s focus on the areas that will drive the greatest impact for customers, partners and business,” the company said.
Samsung reiterates U.S. commitment
Samsung’s decision to move its U.S. headquarters is especially head turning because it just opened the offices in New Jersey almost exactly one year ago. According to NJ.com, the event was attended by state and local officials who praised the investment as evidence of the company’s long-term commitment to New Jersey.
Since then, the Korean conglomerate reiterated its commitment to the U.S.
“Samsung remains committed to its investments across the United States as it builds a stronger foundation for innovation, operational excellence, and sustainable growth,” the company said in its statement.
AT&T is moving to Plano, Texas, too
Historically, Plano has been home to many familiar telco brands. Years ago, it was where PageNet – at one point, the world's largest paging company – staged most of its operational facilities. More recently, it's where Ericsson North America's HQ is located.
Earlier this year, AT&T announced it’s moving its headquarters out of downtown Dallas and into a spacious new 54-acre Plano campus. It’s on the same site that was once home to the headquarters of Ross Perot’s Electronic Data Systems, portions of which were imploded last month.
AT&T’s campus is expected to eventually employ 10,000 full-time workers.
