Sprint's Boost targets tardy customers with 3 GB 'growing data' reward for on-time payments

Sprint's (NYSE: S) Boost Mobile is taking aim at overdue customers with a new promotion that rewards on-time payments with more data. Under Sprint's new promotion for its Boost prepaid brand, customers can obtain 3 GB of extra data per month after 18 on-time payments.

"Every third on-time payment earns an extra 500 MB of high-speed data," Sprint explained. "Customers can earn up to 3 GB of high-speed data after 18 on-time payments. After 18 on-time payments customers will get a $35 plan with 5 GB of high-speed data or a $45 plan with 8 GB of high-speed."

The carrier's "growing data" promotion is available on its $30, $35 and $45 per month plans. The carrier also pointed out it offers an unlimited talking, texting and data plan for $60 per month -- that price is notable considering Sprint this week announced it would raise the price of its Sprint-branded unlimited data plan to $70 per month starting Oct. 16.

Alongside the "growing data" promotion, Sprint said it is now offering a handful of Boost LTE smartphones starting at $19.99.

Sprint's new Boost promotion is just the latest in a series of efforts by Sprint to generate interest in its prepaid brand. In June, Sprint said its Boost Mobile service would cut T-Mobile US' (NYSE:TMUS) MetroPCS and AT&T Mobility's (NYSE: T) Cricket customers' service bills in half if they switch to Boost. And in May Boost Mobile launched a promotion that doubles the data buckets for its $45 and $55 per month plans and also provides a free smartphone for customers who port their number to Boost. Customers must port from a non-Sprint-related carrier. And in January, Sprint's Boost Mobile prepaid brand gave customers on its entry-level $35 plan an increase in data to 2.5 GB when they signed up for automatic payment.

Sprint's efforts to raise the profile of Boost come as the carrier continues to lose prepaid customers. In the second quarter, Sprint said it lost 366,000 prepaid customers. However, that figure was smaller than the net losses of 542,000 prepaid customers Sprint reported in the year-ago quarter -- the carrier said the year-over-year improvement was mostly due to fewer customer losses in its Assurance prepaid brand.

In the second quarter, Sprint said its prepaid ARPU clocked in at $27.81, up 43 cents year-over-year.
