Startup OneLayer wants to wrap private networks in a security blanket

  • OneLayer secures private networks for utility customers and more
  • Ericsson and Nokia already have partnerships with the startup
  • The company has received $14.7 million in funding so far

The growing private wireless market isn't just attracting radio and network vendors. Startup player OneLayer is looking to provide a security stratum for private networks and associated devices.

“Organizations need to manage and secure [private LTE/5G] within their current network setup,” OneLayer CEO David Mor has said. “We established OneLayer to bridge this gap and create one layer of security and one layer of asset management across all organization networks."

OneLayer’s system is all software and focused on protecting the devices that create attack vectors in the private networks. Drew Ganther, VP of sales at the company, told Fierce that the startup already signed partnerships with Ericsson and Nokia. Earlier this year, it also announced integration with Palo Alto Networks' systems.

“They know their customers have this gap and they can’t move fast enough to address it so they partner with us and they actually sell us on top of their networks,” Ganther said.

OneLayer emerged from stealth in 2022 with $8.2 million in its pocket and raised another $6.5 million a few months later, bringing its total raised to $14.7 million.

The VP noted that OneLayer has already scored with utility customers – like water utilities – who are the biggest vertical for OneLayer, spending the most and deploying the largest networks. “These are [often] statewide networks and they’re...primarily all LTE,” Ganther said.

He noted that the company also has two major manufacturing customers – whose names he couldn't share – that are moving along with private cellular. He also noted that the mining sector is important for the company, being probably the most established vertical for private networking. These three, as well as the oil and gas sector, are the main verticals OneLayer is targeting.

It could soon have a little more help in its mission to serve these: OneLayer is expected to announce additional funding soon. Stay tuned.
