At a time when the telecom industry is focused on autonomous networking, T-Mobile is pushing for a broader definition of what autonomy should mean.
During a recent interview, T-Mobile's Chief Network Officer Ankur Kapoor told Fierce Network's Diana Goovaerts at DTW Ignite 2026 that the industry's conversation has traditionally centered on automating individual network domains such as the core, radio access network and IP infrastructure. While those efforts improve operational efficiency, the company's focus is increasingly shifting toward end-to-end customer experiences.
Kapoor described autonomous networking as a way to move beyond basic connectivity and deliver outcomes that directly address customer pain points. One example he cited was T-Mobile's work on dynamic customer experiences, where AI operates behind the scenes to improve service without customers needing to interact with the technology itself.
“Autonomy is awesome,” Kapoor said, but emphasized that its real value comes from translating network intelligence into tangible benefits for users.
Network slicing enters its next phase
Kapoor also highlighted T-Mobile's latest efforts in network slicing, a capability enabled by its 5G standalone architecture. He noted that the company has already deployed more than 20 network slices supporting a range of use cases.
Recent deployments include connectivity services at major events, as well as T-Priority, the operator's offering designed to support first responders during critical situations.
Looking ahead, T-Mobile is working toward dynamic network slicing, where customers could request specialized connectivity services for events or applications without requiring extensive manual intervention from the operator, he said.
Orchestration takes center stage
Delivering that vision requires extensive orchestration across the network. Kapoor said it already has automation systems in place that can create network slices in minutes through an end-to-end orchestrator spanning the core and radio network. He also expressed confidence that its spectrum holdings and network capacity will support growing demand for customized services, pointing to the success of its fixed wireless access business as evidence that it can continue to deliver new connectivity experiences at scale.
