There might be an interesting patent battle emerging between Google and Wayport. Google has been filing for patents as they pertain to delivering advertisements based on a wireless access point's location and a host of other factors, including customer behavior at hotspots. But former Wayport CTO Jim Thompson has said Wayport has a host of patents that overlap these. Apparently, Wayport's intellectual property portfolio in patents were focused on location-based advertising, location-based services, digital certificates and multiple applications over one WiFi network.
